SENONG AND MHLONGO APPLAUD GROWTH IN GIRLS’ GAME AS EASTERN CAPE ACTION HEATS UP

The opening day of the final leg of the 2025 Engen Knockout Challenge kicked off at Dale College in the Eastern Cape, with competitive fixtures setting the tone as semi-final spots were confirmed on the girls’ side.

Engen ambassadors Brighton Mhlongo and Coach Thabo Senong praised the rising standard of football, with a strong focus on the girls’ division.

Sharing his observations, Senong noted:

The level of tactical understanding and game intelligence on display in the girls’ division has been impressive. You can see the influence of professional women’s football these young players are applying structure, showing real football IQ, and bringing a maturity to their play that speaks to how fast the women’s game is growing

Brighton Mhlongo added his thoughts on the rising influence of Banyana Banyana:

“You can see the Banyana effect. There’s a hunger and confidence in these young girls. They believe they belong on big stages, and it starts right here at the Engen Knockout Challenge.”

In the girls’ division, defending champions Nav Galaxy Ladies remain in contention to retain their title. Strong contenders Ebhayi FC Ladies secured a semi-final spot following a 3–0 victory over Phoenix Ladies, while City Lads Ladies, who last lifted the trophy in 2023, made a dominant statement with a 10–0 win over Blackpool to also advance.

In the boys’ division, a new champion awaits to be crowned, with former champions Chippa United finding their way back into the Quater-finals determined to reclaim the title they lost last year.
