The Western Cape will once again be represented by Stellenbosch FC and Cape Town Roses in this year’s Engen Champ of Champs after the two sides were crowned champions in the Western Cape leg of the Engen Knockout Challenge on Sunday, 09 June in Cape Town.
Following an exciting three-day tournament held in Cape Town between 07 – 09 June, the two sides retained their respective titles in front of a packed Erika Park Stadium to earn the right to represent their province in Johannesburg later this year.
Roses were the first to retain their title with an impressive 5-0 win over Dangerous Heroes, who put up a good showing in the tournament but were no match for the class and fluidity of the defending champions.
Stellies on the other hand had to dig deep in their title defense, after they were held by a resilient Cape Town City. After a tightly contested 0-0 draw in front of a highly vocal crowd, it was the defending champions who emerged 4-2 winners from the penalty shootout.
Carrying the inspirational theme of Its Your Moment, the tournament was coupled with high-quality football which was enjoyed by prominent South African coaches such as Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis as well as Cape Town Spurs coach, Ernst Middendorp who both were present throughout the tournament.
Also, in attendance throughout the weekend were the Engen Knockout Challenge Ambassadors, Thabo Senong as well as Brighton Mhlongo.
